Overview
A full day Tour taking in Robben Island, Historical City and Table Mountain.
Robben Island :
Robben Island is a small Island located some twelve kilometers off the coast of Cape Town, in Table Bay.
It has a long colourful history, but perhaps its use a Prison for Political Prisoners during the dark years of Apartheid put it on the map so to speak. Today the Island is a Museum dedicated to the history of the many political prisoners who spent time on the island. -- The best known of course is former President Nelson Mandela, who spent eighteen of his twenty six years in prison incarcerated on the island.
Once on the island visitors are taken on a bus tour of the island as well as a walking tour of the prison including a visit to Mandela’s old cell. The guides on the island are all former Political Prisoners and are therefore able to give a first hand account of what life on the island was like during those dark days.
You will be met at and returned to your accommodation by Sherwood Tours..
As the visit to the island takes a total of three and a half hours -- It is recommended that we endeavour to book you on as early or as late a Ferry as possible. -- This will assist you in maximizing your days activities.
Departure times are 09h00 , 10h00, 11h00, 12h00, 13h00, 14h00 and 15h00 -- You have to check in forty minutes prior to sailing.
Even if it appears to be a hot summery day, you need to take warm clothing, as it can be cold on the ocean, remember too to take your Camera as there are many great photo opportunities.
Table Mountain :
A visit to the top of the Table Mountain is via a very modern cable car system ( the floor of the cable car rotates three-sixty degrees, giving you an awesome view of Cape Town and surrounds as we travel to the top of the mountain ) --- On reaching the upper cableway station at the top of the mountain you are taken on a guided walk on the mountain to soak in wonderful panoramic views of Cape Town and surrounds.
Historical City :
The tour of historical Cape Town, is a drive through tour of the City, taking in a number of historical sites including Cape Town Convention Centre, the Foreshore and Adderley Street ( main street ) the Railway station, Castle of Good Hope a fort and the oldest building in South Africa, a drive through District Six recalling the horrors of the Apartheid era, the Grand Parade, the City Hall and the balcony from which Nelson Mandela addressed the nation immediately after his release from prison, having spent 27 years behind bars, the Law Courts, Caledon Square Police Station, St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Parliament, the old Slave Lodge, St. Georges Anglican Cathedral, the” Company” Gardens, and Bo Kaap the Malay Quarter and many other sites which have historical significance.
Signal Hill :
You will also visit to the summit of Signal Hill to enjoy a more panoramic views of the City, Table Bay, Robben Island, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Seaboard Suburbs before we travel back to your accommodation via Camps Bay and the City.
